William McMahon, PM.

McMahon was elected to the House of Representatives at the 1949 federal election, winning the newly created Division of Lowe for the Liberal Party. His candidacy was endorsed by Billy Hughes, who had known his grandfather. McMahon soon developed a reputation as “a deadly earnest, dogged, enormously hardworking and dedicated member”

Billy PM 1

McMahon is often ranked among Australia’s worst prime ministers. In 2001, five out of six historians surveyed ranked him among their worst five prime ministers.

But why are we discussing Billy McMahon?

Good Question, our former Prime Minister has nothing to do with this “Somerton Man” saga.

We instead should be looking into William MacMahon Ball (aka W MacMahon Ball) and most commonly called MacMahon Ball or Mac Ball.

Will McM 2

William MacMahon Ball was born in Casterton, Victoria, on 29 August 1901. Educated first at Caulfield Grammar School and then at the University of Melbourne, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) in 1923. From 1924 to 1929 Ball was a research scholar in psychology at the University of Melbourne, lecturing in Psychology, Logic and Ethics.

On 20 December 1929 Ball married Katrine, daughter of J.T. Noble-Anderson, who was a friend and business partner of Sir John Monash.

In the same year, Ball won a Rockefeller Fellowship to the London School of Economics. While on this fellowship, Ball made a special study of public opinion and propaganda methods in Germany. He spent 1929-1932 in London, Germany, France and Italy, studying European politics.

On his return to Australia, Ball secured a post at the University of Melbourne, lecturing in Modern Political Institutions. This period lasted from 1932 to 1938, when he again went abroad, this time on a Carnegie Fellowship. Between 1938 and 1939 Ball spent several months attached to the BBC studying its methods of programming talks and collecting and broadcasting world news. At the time of the Munich crisis, Ball went through Sudetenland with the German Army, visited Prague and spent a day in Sachenhausen concentration camp, the first foreigner allowed to visit such a camp for several years.

Who's Who in Aust 1938

Who’s who in Australia in 1938

From 1940 to 1944, Ball was Controller of Short Wave Broadcasts for the Commonwealth Government. In February 1940 he was granted special leave to take charge of the broadcasting work in the Department of Information. His unit recorded, translated and analysed enemy broadcasts.

Yes, his unit recorded, translated and analysed enemy broadcasts.

Invited by Prime Minister (Sir) Robert Menzies, in February 1940 Ball was appointed controller of broadcasting in the Department of Information. In June he became responsible solely for short-wave broadcasting. As well as heading a team that monitored overseas transmissions, he took charge of the nation’s information and propaganda services directed to friendly, neutral and enemy countries in the region. Under Ball, the material disseminated abroad avoided blatant disinformation and crude hate, and thus gained credibility. His section was transferred to the ABC in July 1942.

Mac Ball held a high posting at 216 Domain Road, South Yarra which was one of the more significant interception and decryption groups in Australia during WWII. It was close to all the other major military headquarters in Domain Rd, St Kilda Rd and Marlton Crescent.

St Michaels Church of England Girls Grammar School was used for almost a year for military purposes.

He resigned in protest when Arthur Calwell moved it back to the department in April 1944. Ball remained with the ABC and added to his public laurels by chairing the popular radio debates, `Nation’s Forum of the Air’.

In 1945, shortly before the end of the Pacific War, Ball returned to Melbourne University as Senior Lecturer in charge of the Department of Political Science. Also in 1945, Ball was sent to San Francisco as Adviser to the Australian Delegation at the United Nations Conference, and from November to December was Australian Government Political Representative in the Netherlands East Indies.

Ball’s diplomatic work continued after the War, taking him to Japan from 1946 to 1947 as Member of the Allied Council for Japan, representing jointly UK, India, Australia and New Zealand. In 1948 he led the Australian Government Goodwill Mission to countries in East and South-East Asia.

Returning again to the University of Melbourne, Ball held the post of Professor of Political Science from 1949 to his retirement in 1968. During this time, in 1955, he travelled to the UK on a British Commonwealth Fellowship, stationed at Chatham House and St Anthony’s College, Oxford.

Throughout his career, Ball was a regular commentator on world affairs for the ABC. He also broadcast many times for the BBC. He contributed articles on international affairs to British and Australian newspapers.

Hey Luke!

Darth A

“Luke, I am your father!”

Luke 2

Dad, you tell me that you are my father, but at first glance should I probably question that?

Do you think we should contact the Professor and ask him to include the word “biological” or perhaps “genetic” in his statements when he says Prosper is Robin’s father? So far he hasn’t said those words to me.

Now, after examining the two photo extracts a bit further down, I ask you to form an opinion about why Charlie is not (yep I said NOT) the remains exhumed by SAPOL!

Please form an opinion as to whether the guy leaning up against the blue car matches Prosper or the 14 year deceased Charlie now at age 57 and living in the UK.

Have we all (the 100’s of amateur  sleuths) been taken for a ride?

Was Charlie evacuated from our shores (via Fremantle about the 14th of January 1949) by an authority that found what Charlie knew was bigger than the boundaries of the current laws of our island nation, and one of the nation’s largest cover-ups was orchestrated by a few?

Was the story of the former owner of the hairs from the bust already known to this authority before these hairs were released to the Professor to complete the stage show?

      Charlie close1

Are you there Kate?

Kate, could you contact me about the holiday and I could also run the identity of Robin’s actual father past you please?

Whilst it would be good to get the facts sorted on SM, it is also my opinion that a connected case from 18 years later is worthy of closure as well. Yes, the Beaumont kids case.

HC ID Card A

It would seem the entire world believes the Somerton Man case is done and dusted. Well maybe there’s someone left that doesn’t. Me. Is there anyone else?

Time for a break!

The activity and noise surrounding the “Body On The Beach” case was declining around Adelaide, and as Prosper’s workload was about to ramp up at International Harvester in Mile End where he sold farm machinery and where the new truck line had just come in, he and Jessi decided it was time to take an overseas holiday with the family.

One stop while they were in Europe was to call in to the UK where the picture with the blue Austin A40 Farina MkII (below) was taken.

An Adelaide Professor was to obtain some hair samples from SAPOL which are reported as being extracted from the plaster bust which was made to illustrate the features of the body on the beach.

They did not come directly (and can’t be confirmed as coming) from the body, whose remains were exhumed by SAPOL from the Unknown Man grave.

A 57 year old Charlie above.

And here is a young Carl “Charlie” Webb at about 24 years of age.

Now, fast forward to a trip the Thomsons made to Europe in 1962.

BlueCar2

Is there a problem with Charlie being in this photo?

Yes, Charlie was supposed to have passed in 1948, and this photo was taken in 1962.

Prosper, Jessi, Robin and Kate first set foot back on Australian soil at Fremantle (WA) on 31st of Oct 1962. The last leg of their journey left Genoa (Italy) on board the Cogedar Line T/S “Flavia”.

But why did we miss this? Or how did we miss this?

It’s because this 60 Minutes episode went to air in late 2013 which was almost 10 years before we were to hear the first mention of the name Carl Charles Webb.

Is this Prosper Thomson on holidays?

Or is this Charlie at age of 57?

Would this be the last time Jessi would see Charlie?

MileEnd

Prosper continued his private cars sales, albeit to a lesser extent, from his Mile End desk.

One stop while they were in Europe was to call in to the UK where the picture below was taken.

BlueCar D

In the words of Charles Wooley “Jessica would eventually marry Kate’s dad Prosper Thomson and together they’d have Kate”

Now, therein may lie a problem.

Charles Wooley’s words above are accurate, but, does the photo paint a different picture? It implies the male is Prosper but this was years before we met and saw Charlie Webb so any confusion is understandable.

We see Kate in the driver’s seat but is a 12 year old allowed in charge of a motor vehicle?

Carl Charles Webb in the background doesn’t seem worried.

This 60 Minutes episode went to air in late 2013 which was almost 10 years before we were to hear the first mention of the name Carl Charles Webb.

George naa 1

The two photos (above) are supposedly of Prosper “George” Thomson.

However, there is a difference and it is likely that the top one of the two is Carl “Charlie” Webb.

Now tell me that this photo of a young Charlie in about 1929 doesn’t match the top photo of the 2 above which I have nominated as 57 year old Charlie! The photo with Kate and the blue car is 14 years after he was supposed to have passed on Somerton Beach in Adelaide. As I say at the opening, and in other posts, Somerton Man (Charlie) survived!

BlueCar2

But is there a problem with Charlie being in this photo?

Yes, Charlie was supposed to have passed in 1948.

The car Charlie is leaning on is an Austin A40 Farina MkII.

The Austin A40 Farina MkI was designed just before 1958 when it was released to sales. The MkII was released about 1962.

570DGK-A

The registration of the car indicates it was registered at the office of the relevant Department of Transport around 1962 which aligns with the family trip details.

570DGK C

The near permanent attachment of fog lenses to the car’s headlights may indicate that Charlie lived in an area of frequent sea fogs such as Harrogate or Scarborough near Menwith Hill Communications Base, or perhaps it was at Anstruther in Scotland, where the Royal Naval Air Station “Crail” aka RNAS Crail (HMS Jackdaw) which was the home to the Joint Services School for Linguists, was located.

Prosper, Jessi, Robin and Kate first set foot back on Australian soil at Fremantle (WA) on 31st of Oct 1962. The last leg of their journey left Genoa (Italy) on board the Cogedar Line T/S “Flavia”.
