Meet the H. C. Reynolds’s ID Card:-

HC ID Card A

WikiLogo 1

In 2011, a local Adelaide woman contacted biological anthropologist Maciej Henneberg about an identification card of an H. C. Reynolds that she had found in her father’s possessions. The card, a document issued to foreign seamen during World War I, was given to Henneberg in October 2011 for comparison of the ID photograph to that of the Somerton man. While Henneberg found anatomical similarities in features such as the nose, lips and eyes, he believed they were not as reliable as the close similarity of the ear. The ear shapes shared by both men were a “very good” match, although Henneberg also found what he called a “unique identifier”; a mole on the cheek that was the same shape and in the same position in both photographs. “Together with the similarity of the ear characteristics, this mole, in a forensic case, would allow me to make a rare statement positively identifying the Somerton man.”

The ID card, numbered 58757, was issued in the United States on 28 February 1918 to H. C. Reynolds, giving his nationality as “British” and age as 18.

As Australia was still nominated on official documents as a British Realm, this ID Card was of an Australian Seaman.

Searches conducted by the US National Archives, the UK National Archives and the Australian War Memorial Research Centre have failed to find any records relating to H. C. Reynolds.

Some independent researchers believe the ID card belonged to Horace Charles Reynolds, a Tasmanian man who died in 1953 and therefore could not have been the Somerton man. The ID Card was shown to the family of Horace Charles Reynolds and they recognised it as one they had seen before, however the photograph was definitely not of the Tasmanian Reynolds or anyone known to the family. There was some commentary that the cover may have shown some evidence of lifting off in the area of the photo.

*above passage is taken from Wikipedia as it describes exactly what was required to be explained.

The Somerton Man exercise was to get Carl “Charles” Webb to safety and anonymity, yet make it look like Charlie had been eliminated to the players in the Adelaide area. Apart from modelling for the plaster bust, he was then able to disappear to the UK.

A look-a-like in Alexander Arthur Dowling was available to replace Charlie on the beach as he was becoming a vagrant around the parks and beaches. He was no longer in relationships with his children and his wife, father and mother had all passed. He had had no contact with any of his family for many years. He had served time in gaol for several appearances at court on child abandonment and failure to pay support charges.

On the death of Thomas Spencer Hall Cutlack on the 12th of June 1949,  Alexander Arthur Dowling was released from his “Charlie” duties and placed aside in a casket marked Thomas Spencer Hall Cutlack. He would be then cremated at the old West Terrace Crematorium on the 14th of June 1949 and his ashes scattered in the gardens to disappear without a trace.

And where does Malcolm Anstice Rafferty fit into this jigsaw puzzle? We may yet have to switch the boxes but not the players.

Also on or about the 14th of June 1949, TSH Cutlack had his ID inspection done by the “Constable to the Coroner” and his casket was sealed and sent for burial.

He was laid to rest in a paupers style grave on top position with two others and later had the spot marked with the “Unknown Man” headstone (below). The funeral was paid for by the SA Bookmakers Association.

An excavation and funeral were carried out for Alexander Arthur Dowling on the 7th of Dec 1948, but did he attend his own committal? Or who (or what) went into Alex’s grave? A headstone (above) was placed in the AIF section of West Terrace Cemetery as a memorial to Alex.

Tamam!

The Mexican (Adelaide) Standoff!

Mexican standoff 3

Definition:- A Mexican standoff is a confrontation where no strategy exists that allows any party to achieve victory. Any party initiating aggression might trigger their own demise. At the same time, the parties are unable to extract themselves from the situation without suffering a loss. As a result, all participants need to maintain the strategic tension (status quo), which remains unresolved until some outside event or interparty dialogue makes it possible to resolve it.

The term Mexican standoff was originally used in the context of using firearms and it still commonly implies a situation in which the parties face some form of threat from the other parties.

face2face 2
Mexican standoff 1
A Mexican Standoff where no-one dare go first as it will mean their demise as well.

A situation in which people on opposite sides threaten each other but neither tries to come to an agreement.

HC ID Card A

So anyone holding the H C Reynolds ID Card may assume they would be immune from prosecution for any of their past (or future) misdemeanours, as any action against them would initiate a proportional response that may implicate both the original parties.

However, if this base information or knowledge became available from outside the “Mexican Standoff”, the immunity would be negated.

JailFree B

This orange card would then have no value to its holder and any immunity is voided.

Let me introduce you to one of the luckiest “toe-rags” of the period.

Well, for as long as his luck held anyway. And you know good things don’t last forever.

This is Malcolm!  Mal A Raff 2

This is supposed to be Charlie! Pic face 1

This is Malcolm!  Mal A Raff 1

This is Malcolm Anstice Rafferty.

Mal Hat1

(p.s. I apologise for the quality, it’s the best I have at the moment but he looks a bit familiar)

His father (below) was Lt Col Rupert Anstice Rafferty, DSO

Rupert 1

Lt Col Rupert A Rafferty, DSO (1875-1945)

Malcolm Rafferty was the eldest son of Rupert and Sarah Rafferty and started life in Tasmania on 15th February1902, having only a sister older than him and 5 younger siblings.

Malcolm was gay and bi-sexual and found himself up in front of the bench many times and in many states in Australia.

“Malcolm, you are entitled to one phone call, would you like to call your solicitor?”

“No, Gov, I’ll call father.”

…………………->

“Constable, mark the Rafferty file N. O. D. please, I’ve just received a call from the top”

“Sir, we’ve got this sod cold, he’s NOT A NODDY”

“N.O.D. son, and now please”

“Sir”

Up until Malcolm’s father’s passing in April 1945, Malcolm’s life was colourful and the silver spoon was gleaming in the sun when he took it out, but that would change.

Soon after his father’s death Malcolm would be jailed for 6 months for his misdemeanours against both men and women. He would be slotted for behavioural and sex crimes committed Australia wide. He could no longer rely on Rupert keeping him out of gaol.

Headstone 1

But,

He makes a significant mistake on 25th May 1944 when he follows a woman off a bus in Adelaide.

And could it prove to be a fatal mistake when he assaults and bashes her?

Assault 1944

You see, Clarice Eva Eleanor Sutherland was the wife of someone we know well in this saga.

Scan A

Malcolm bashed Clarice Sutherland who was the wife of William Sutherland. But that name may not ring any bells.

We know William better by the name of Scan Sutherland or “Scotty” Sutherland, the Constable to the Coroner.

Do the crime, do the time and Malcolm gets 6 months, takes up a short residence in Sydney, but then nothing. Malcolm disappears till he re-appears in 1959 in the South Pacific. Or should I say re-disappears?

Muniara 1959 A

Muniara 1959 B

Despite the reports of bodies on the beach (they were 44 gallon drums) the ship and its crew were never located. The crew were non-english speaking islanders and there was only Captain Smith and Rafferty who spoke English.

The only debris found was 1 life jacket with the name “Muniara”, 1 hatch cover and 1 piece of the cargo of timber and 2 life rafts. The authorities believed the ship should have floated at (or just below) the surface as the entire cargo was dried timber and it was all stowed below deck.

The only official statement about the loss appears to be the Steamships Trading Company of Port Moresby’s Annual Report were it lists the loss as a cost to the company.

But was it Malcolm Anstice Rafferty or was it Charlie Webb who, with the help of Jessi and Alf in being placed with Captain Smith, was able to enjoy the private cruising life of the South Pacific till he felt safe enough to again disappear in 1959 and turn up as someone else in the UK?

There is still a need for Alexander Arthur Dowling to be the man on the beach as Charlie and Alex are 5″ 11″ but Malcolm Anstice Rafferty is 5″ 5″ (6″ closer to the ground).

Walk like an Egyptian! (#18)

FT Elliott C

Laurie Addison Elliott.

Why did the Somerton Man Undertaker choose to embalm the remains presented to him in the same manner as the Ancient Egyptians? Or was he requested to do so?

The methods of embalming, or treating the dead body, that the ancient Egyptians used is called mummification. Using special processes, the Egyptians removed all moisture from the body, leaving only a dried form that would not easily decay. It was important in their religion to preserve the dead body in as life-like a manner as possible. So successful were they that today we can view the mummified body of an Egyptian and have a good idea of what he or she looked like in life, 3,000 years ago.

So why is it taking SAPOL so long to make the DNA results public?

Funeral 3crop

There are seven steps involved in the ancient Egyptian practice of embalming.

These steps are:

  • Washing the dead body with the holy waters of the Nile River.
  • Removing the brain by smashing it and pulling it out through the nose.
  • Stuffing and covering the body with natron, a natural salt and preservative.
  • Stuffing the removed organs with natron salt and putting them into four jars.
  • Wrapping the body with linen bandages and applying resin to seal them.
  • Decorating the wrapped body with amulets and jewellery.
  • Placing the body into a coffin and performing rituals.

It’s unlikely that Laurie Elliott went to the extents listed above but was more likely to have carried out the treatment of the dead body so as to sterilise it or to protect it from decay. For practical as well as theological reasons a well-preserved body has long been a chief mortuary consideration.

The ancient Greeks, who demanded endurance of their heroes in death as in life, expected the bodies of their dead to last without artificial aid during the days of mourning that preceded the final rites.

Why did he decide it may be required to go the extra yard for this body, should the Somerton Man need to be exhumed? Or was he requested to do so?

Why did this particular body attract so much more attention when compared to the many other unidentified bodies presented each year?

Everybody associated with this Somerton Man saga seemed to have underlying suspicions they weren’t prepared to air, and not knowing what that suspicion related to.

Funeral 2

And, why did the Cemetery Trust place the Somerton Man in the driest plot available in case exhumation was required? Or were they requested to do so?

This was likely asked for by Laurie Elliott, given that he was reported as doing an Egyptian mummification.

Why was Councillor, Cycle and Motor Cycle Shop Owner, Scout Commissioner and significant road cycling champion Laurie Elliott nominated to be the representative of F T Elliott and Sons (Undertakers) and did all the Somerton Man duties when he took only a small part in the Funeral Home Business? Or was he requested to do so?

Laurie Elliott Councillor

Still so many questions!
