Meanwhile, on Sydney Harbour:-

This is the HMS Duke Of York.

“They inspected the vessel’s secret war equipment.” In July 1945, when the substances required for Little Boy and Fat Man were being readied for delivery to Tinian Island.

 

This is the HMS King George V.

 

This is Landing Ship (Tank) LS 3035.

The LS 3035 as it was listed was also known as LST Lae or LS Lae and later as HMAS Lae.

 

And this is HMHS Somersetshire.

MV Somersetshire was built in 1921 and served as a passenger ship till used in WWII.

In the war it became a hospital ship as HMHS Somersetshire and also a troop ship. It then returned to duties as a passenger ship and travelled the world but was generally tasked around the Pacific Ocean till retirement and breaking up in 1954.

 

Question:- Were these the vessels Helmuth Hendon and his cronies were monitoring the movements of in Sydney Harbour? 

Answer:- Absolutely!

Yellowcake was produced at Port Pirie in 1945!

Yellowcake, after being crushed and leached from the ore using acids and alkalis, can be found in pressed cake format, powder form or as granules and can be any colour from yellow to brown or black. The yellowcake sent to Wales was in manageable bags.

The smell of yellowcake in its post leaching state is quite foul.

It’s common for transporters that don’t want to be linked to the yellowcake they have on board to place old meat strategically around the cargo to disguise the smell of the U308.

Off to Wales we take our product!

The 2 recent photos above are of the original entrance to the Rhydymwyn Gaseous Diffusion site which took the yellowcake and processed it into Weapons Grade Enriched Uranium U235.

This Wales site used gaseous diffusion, which is a complex type of filtration, and it was different to the later US process of a more complex gaseous centrifugal extraction.

This is Malcolm Anstice Rafferty.

I mention Malcolm in the post Memory of an Elephant, or a Scot! (#19)

Malcolm had a varied career, and life. And he had almost as many jobs as the reader has had hot meals. Well, it seems that way!

And the number of Police charge sheets ran a close second to the number of jobs he had.

During the WWII years he lists his occupation as a Draughtsman at #5 position above.

So, are these the tools of a draughtsman?

3 x H lead pencils and a sharpener.

The brands were 2 x Royal Sovereign (Royal Sovereign Pencil Co) and 1 x Alexandra (B S Cohen).

The B S Cohen pencil is the oldest as the B S Cohen organisation became Arthur Johnson’s then it became Royal Sovereign Pencil Co.

H leads are extremely smudge-resistant and give cleaner lines, making them useful for things such as outlines, technical drawings and light sketches. Left-handed pencil users can also take advantage of smudge-resistant H leads.
